Gill Williams
Gina Marshall
Gina is an artist from Weymouth but now lives in Swanage. In 2013 she began drawing and painting, making great progress over a period of 6 months of 1:1 tuition. During the 1:1 tuition she dabbled with ink, and loving the vivid colours, used it on watercolour paper both painting and drawing with ink on this surface.
She has taken inspiration from wood cuts, doodle art and pointillism but also uses a great deal of imagination. She is inspired by the Dorset coastline and deconstructs the elements to build them back up again into defined, strongly delineated areas filled with repetitive motifs.
She also uses humour in her pictures through the choice of motifs and simplification of their form.
Most of my life I have been fortunate enough to have lived in Dorset where I discovered that the Isle of Purbeck is an inspiration of natural and man-made wonders. I hope my work conveys something of the magic of this unique county. The colours of the seasons are important to me as well as the movement of the sky and sea along the Dorset coastline. I try to communicate the changes in mood, using the freedom and translucency of watercolour overlaid with pen and ink detail.
Rebecca Drury
Rebecca Drury is a Dorset-based printmaker. Her colourful linoprints are inspired by Dorset’s wildlife, coast and countryside, and occasionally also by her children and work in biodiversity conservation. Her limited edition linocuts are meticulously carved and printed by hand in Rebecca's home studio using traditional block printing techniques. Some are monochrome prints using one block, while others are produced by applying several layers of colour using multiple blocks or a reduction printing approach.
Sarah Kelly
I am a painter who expresses the feeling of big skies, wide open spaces and the
effects of light on water. Being outside is important to me and it is where I find
most of my inspiration whether sailing, kayaking or cycling. Often a fleeting
moment can be so exciting and the joy I feel at witnessing it is a powerful
motivator to paint.
My preferred medium is oils as they suit my way of working. I use the indirect
method as this helps me to achieve depth especially when suggesting water. I like
to develop a piece of work through the build up of layers, and I particularly like to
use the transparent and opaque qualities of different paints. The drying time
needed using this method allow me time to reflect of the progress of the piece. I
know when it is resolved when I feel I can walk into the scene.
I grew up in Eastbourne, then lived in London for a while designing custom-made
built in furniture before moving to Dorset with my husband. For 14 years I worked
as a Creative Artist in a day hospice in Poole teaching various art techniques to
the patients; a job that I really valued. Concentrating on my own artwork has
allowed me to develop ideas and had led to some interesting and varied
commissions too.
Amanda Bates
Amanda spent her childhood rescuing dragons from princes and her early adult life attempting to understand uncertainty. She is now an artist with a special interest in the narrative tendencies of trees.
Using pen and ink on paper or kaolin, form dominates colour and much of Amanda's work is starkly, dramatically monochrome, drawing frequent comparisons to classic fairy tale illustrations.
Eleanor Spalding
Eleanor was born and raised between London and Dorset. After graduating in Fashion Design from Edinburgh College of Art she began a career within the Costume department for Film and TV.
She has recently returned to Swanage and inspired by the local landscape, draws in oil bar pastels ‘en plein air’ enjoying the energetic, immediate and visceral quality it brings to her work. Her drawings evoke the atmosphere of the Dorset landscape through expressive mark making and the use of rich, natural colours. She often explores the use of white space, allowing the landscape to appear like an explosion out of the frame.
Her artwork invites the viewer to use their imagination and personal emotional response to interpret their vision of the contemporary landscapes.
Kasia Zagloba
Kasia have been working in architecture for many years but since moving to Dorset she reignited her artistic passions. She uses soft pastels as her favourite medium and the local landscapes as inspiration. Many of her pieces are directly influenced by the walks she takes.
Laurie King
I’m Laurie King, an illustrator and graphic designer living the coastal life in Swanage Bay. It’s a great place to be inspired by the outdoors and through my love of cycling and running I find beautiful landscapes and routes that I capture within my illustrative artwork. As well as sketching and painting I enjoy working on bespoke creative projects with other businesses and individuals and am always open to discussing ways to make ideas a reality.
Nancy Jones
I studied for a graphic design degree in Leeds, specialising in illustration. This gave me the chance to develop my appreciation for detail in art and experiment with artistic styles and techniques, culminating in finding my love for watercolour painting. I have been painting with watercolour and gouache ever since, now drawing on the beautiful landscapes and inspiring nature around me.
